In this article we describe how to create a CPD period. CPD periods specify the time range during which CPD Hours or Points must be achieved. CPD Periods are added to a CPD programme. CPD learning resources (Lessons) are associated with specific CPD periods and contribute to the CPD Programme they are completed in.
CPD periods define:
- Which Users are enrolled on the CPD programme
- The target number of CPD hours/points enrolled Users must accrue
- Which Lessons contribute hours/points to the CPD total
Note that it's also possible to auto-create a new CPD period relative to the date the previous CPD period ended.
Steps to create a CPD Period
- Browse to the 'CPD programme' area of Learn admin:
- Select the name of a CPD programme that a CPD period needs to be added to
- Select 'CPD period' from the administration menu:
- Select ‘New’ to create a new CPD period:
- Specify the 'Target' for the CPD period, which represents the number of credits needed. Enter the desired value for the CPD period target (in hours or units):
- 'Accredited target' - if accredited points are required for this CPD programme, specify them here as this defines the number of accredited hours the professional body (such as CIPD), requires the learner to accrue.
- Specify the 'Start date' for the CPD period. This start date cannot overlap with any other CPD periods for the same CPD programme
- Specify the 'Duration' for the CPD period. This can be number of days, weeks, months, or years
- Select ‘Submit’ to save the CPD period details. The next steps are to assign it to learners and specify which Lessons contribute to the CPD total.
Auto-create the next CPD period
You can also configure the system to automatically create the next CPD period when the current one expires. The new period can:
- Use the same duration as the previous period
- Copy enrolled users
- Copy selected Lessons that contribute toward the CPD total
Automatic creation is controlled by setting a time offset relative to the end date of the current CPD period.
Use the following format to define when the next period should be created relative to the end date:
- D – Days
- W – Weeks
- M – Months
- Y – Years
For example:
- Enter D-7 to create the next CPD period 7 days before the current period ends.
This allows upcoming CPD periods to be generated automatically and consistently, ensuring learners always have an active period available. Visit the CPD section of Global Settings to specify the auto-create settings.
