Learn - Notify a User and their manager when a Lesson is completed

In this article, we'll explain how to set up an automated notification to be delivered to a User and their Manager when a Lesson is completed. We'll also show how to send either the default notification or a custom version for an individual Lesson.

Configuring notifications on Lesson completion is a great way to praise and reward learners for their successes, and to signpost further related learning. It's a great step towards building a learning culture in your organisation. Notifications can also be triggered when a Lesson is failed, providing details to learners and their managers of the next step in their development.

We'll cover how to:

• Create a custom notification for a specific Lesson
• Specify which notifications should be sent

Steps to create a custom notification for a specific Lesson

1. Browse to the Lesson area of Learn admin:
2. Select the Lesson for which a custom notification is to be set up
3. Select 'Email templates' from the Lesson administration menu
4. Select 'New' to add a new custom template for this Lesson:
5. Select from the drop-down menu the notification for which you would like to create a custom version. Note that the list shows ALL 'Lesson level' notifications that may be customised for this Lesson:
6. Select 'Add' to add the notification to the Lesson. This creates a copy of the default notification.
7. Select 'Edit':
8. The notification can now be edited as you wish. Along with changes to the notification, it's also possible to change the subject line, BCC, and reply to address:
9. Select 'Submit' to save the changes:
10. Enter a suitable email into the 'test email' field, and select 'send'. If the resulting email looks ready to go, enable the notification following the steps at the start of this article. 

Steps to specify which notifications should be sent

The custom version is created, so the next step is to activate it. Whenever a 'local' version of an email template is created following the steps below, it will override the global version of the template. 

1. Browse to the Lesson area of Learn admin:
2. Select the Lesson for which a notification is to be set up
3. Select 'Notification' from the Lesson administration menu
4. Select the notifications to switch on, and the date from when they should be sent:
5. Select 'Submit' to save the settings.
