In this article, we'll show how prerequisites are used to set the availability of lessons in a Course. This ensures that learners follow the designed Lesson order, and can help to ensure they stay engaged, and aren't overloaded with too much information at once.
Pre-requisites can help in several ways, for example to:
- Require learners to complete pre-reading before booking classroom training
- Ensure lessons are completed in a specific order within a Course
- Prevent learners from taking assessments or quizzes until all lessons are completed
Pre-requisites are set at the course level for all lessons assigned to the course. Administrators can specify that certain lessons are only available after completing specific earlier lessons. For example, Lesson B won't be accessible until Lesson A is finished.
Lessons can also have multiple prerequisites; for instance, Lesson C can be locked until both Lesson A and Lesson B are completed.

Steps to set up Lesson pre-requisites
- Browse to the Course area of Learn admin:
- Select the Course that pre-requisites need to be set for. Use the Search options if required to filter the list to find the required Course:
- Select Lesson from the Course administration menu:
- Check the Lesson sequence is configured as required. Use the 'Sequence' option to reorder the Lessons if needed:
- Select Pre-requisites for the Lesson where a prerequisite is required. In this example, learners must complete the Coaching Skills eLearning (Lesson 1) before they can book onto the Coaching Skills workshop (Lesson 2). Therefore Lesson 2 is selected. Lesson 2 has the prerequisite, Lesson 1 is the prerequisite:
- Select New to add a new prerequisite
- Make a selection from the 'Lesson' dropdown. For this example, Lesson 1 is selected:
- Set Lesson availabilty. Choose from 'Immediately' or set a delay, so the Lesson is available after a set period of time has lapsed, or until a specfied date is reached. Note, that If choosing to defer the availability of the Lesson, a reason can be given which is displayed to the User when the pre-requisite is met
- Select Save to create the prerequisite
The above steps can be repeated as many times as required. A Lesson can have multiple prerequisites.
Prerequisites and Accreditations
When an Accreditation triggers a Lesson to be repeated, it does not change the status of the Lesson - it is the status of the Accreditation status that changes to 'expired' until the Lesson is repeated. The Lesson status will remain as 'Complete'.
Therefore, if a prerequisite is based on a Lesson with an Accreditation, then the prerequisite will appear only the first time a learner completes the Course. It will not reappear in subsequent years, when the Accreditation triggers the Lesson to be repeated.
