In this article, we'll explain how to show an average rating for a Section in a review, and for the review overall.
A Section average can be included for any Section that includes a rating, for example an Overview of objectives Section, or a Step Section containing one or more Number scale questions. It's a great way to compare the reviewee and reviewer perspective of key areas of work, and also to provide a benchmark across all people in the team.
An overall average will appear in the sign-off section, and is an 'average of averages' for all ratings in the review. This single metric can be very useful in understanding team performance.
A few things to know:
- The total of 100% is distributed equally across all points in the scale
- The rating assumes that answer 1 is the least positive response on the scale
- Averages will only show once both reviewer and reviewee have rated
We'll cover how:
- to show an Overview of objectives section
- to show an average for all Number scale questions in a Step Section
- to show an average for all rating questions in a review
- How the average is calculated
Show an average for an Overview of objectives section
- Browse to an Overview of objectives Section
- Select Edit:
- Specify who should be able to rate objectives (reviewer only, reviewee only, both)
- Select the scale to use. Note that Perform is supplied with a Default rating scale. Perform administrators can also create a custom scale.
- Select Calculate average rating:
- Select Save
An average rating (displayed as a percent) will now appear at the end of the Overview of objectives section - when both reviewer and reviewee have given a rating, and shared their answers.
Note: You can choose to make the objective section mandatory before a review can be signed off. This will ensure a rating is calculated.
Show an average for all Number scale questions in a Step Section
An average rating can be calculated for any Step Section with one or more Number scale questions. All number scale questions will be rated on the same scale.
To set this up:
- Browse to any Step Section that contains Number scale questions
- Select Edit:
- Select the scale to use. Note that Perform is supplied with a Default rating scale. Perform administrators can also create a custom scale.
- Select Calculate average rating:
- Select Save
An average rating (displayed as a percent) will now appear at the end of the Step Section - when both reviewer and reviewee have given a rating, and shared their answers.
Show an overall average for all rating questions in a review
Note that this option will be available only if the review template contains rating scales.
- Browse to the Sign off Section:
- Select Edit:
- Select Calculate overall average rating:
- Select Save
An overall average for all sections in the review will be displayed in the sign off Section - when both reviewer and reviewee have given a rating, and shared their answers.
How the average is calculated
If there are 5 possible answers, each is worth 20%. Therefore, if answer 1 is selected for a question, a score of 20% will be shown.
Perform always assume that answer one is the least positive.
If the rating scale used has a zero as the first answer (see below) then selecting answer 0 will produce a percent of zero:
