In this article, we'll show how to create a Competency Check - an observed demonstration of a skill or activity signed off by a subject matter expert. If the learner doesn't pass, the learner can repeat the learning and arrange a second attempt. Competency Checks ensure learners understand the subject and contribute to a cycle of feedback and continuous improvement.
A Competency Check can involve any activity or task where learners must demonstrate their understanding and application of learning. Examples include responding to queries, performing routine tasks, or problem-solving. Customers also use Competency Checks to sign off on significant milestones, such as passing a probation period.
A few things to know about About Competency Checks:
- They appear to learners as a Lesson
- Administrators can assign to one or more Courses, just like a Lesson
- Can be signed off by a User's Manager, Course Tutor, members of a specified Group, or Group administrators (of Groups to which the check is assigned)
- If multiple people or a specified Group can complete the check, the Learner will see all available checker names
- The date of the check can be backdated (administrators can choose if this is available)
- A Check includes instructions for both the learner and the checker
- The learner and checker agree on when the check will take place, and the checker updates Learn once it’s completed
Steps to create a Competency Check
- In Learn admin, browse to Competency Check:
- Select New to add a new check:
- The first section contains the information that a learner will see when viewing the Competency Check as part of a Course. First, add a title:
- Add a Description. This should offer a clear explanation of the activity or task that the learner is required to demonstrate.
- Add a Duration. This is the estimated time the check will take to complete. It's also the 'learning time' credited to the learner when the check is passed
- The next section contains the information visible to the User who is signing off the check. First, add a Description of the task to be observed (this may be the same as the detail entered in step 4 above:
- Add guidance notes. These instructions should make clear the task to be performed and the criteria for success.
- Section 3 contains information for Administrators. First, add a unique code:
- Add a Category (if using). Categories are a great way to help organise content in your LMS. View this article for more information about Categories and how they work
- Section 4 contains details of who can sign off the check. Identify who should sign off the check. This can be any combination of the available options. Note that a Competency Check can only be signed off once. If 'Members of selected Groups' is selected, then the Group(s) must be specified:
- Select Create
