In this article, we’ll explore the Audit Log in your Learn LMS and show you how to use it to investigate User activity. The Audit Log captures a detailed record of User actions, making it an essential tool for administrators.
It is commonly used to track actions such as deletions, assignments, (and unassignments) performed by Users. For example, you can use the Audit Log to determine when a Course was assigned to a Group, when a Lesson was deleted (and therefore all history for the Lesson was deleted), and which User performed the action.
In this article, we'll cover:
- View and edit Audit log settings
- View Audit log records
- Useful entries in the Audit log
- Export an Audit log to Excel and extract key details
View and edit Audit log settings
- In Learn admin, browse to settings:
- Select Audit log from the Settings Administration menu to view the Audit log options
Manual purge
Purge means 'Delete,' so options in this section are related to the instant deletion of all records of User activity.
Audit log settings
Here, you can configure two key settings: first, whether the audit log is enabled (which we highly recommend), and second, the duration for which the audit log should retain records of User activity.
To improve site performance, we generally recommend you keep no more than 3 months of records. Generally, if there is a problem that you need to investigate, it will become evident well within this time:
View Audit log records
In this video we'll show how to view audit log records for all Users, or for specific Users only:

- Select a date range

Export an Audit log to Excel and extract key details
The Audit log lists activity in very granular detail, and this can extend to many hundreds of pages. When that's the case, it can be helpful to extract to Excel to analyse further.
In this video, we'll export to Excel and share a tip to help you focus on exactly the detail you need.
