In this article, we’ll show how to add a matrix visualisation to a page in Power BI.
Matrix visualisations are a great way to summarise information in lengthy data tables. Where a table supports two dimensions and the data is flat (meaning duplicate values are displayed and not aggregated), a matrix automatically aggregates the data. Rows can be expanded and collapsed to show and hide data layered beneath, allowing the viewer to focus in on detail as required.
Watch the video below or follow the steps below to add a matrix visualisation to a report:
Steps to add a matrix visualisation to a report
- Start a new User-created report or open an existing report
- From the Visualisations panel, select 'Matrix visualisation':
An empty matrix visualisation - which looks a lot like a data table at this point - will be added to the report.
- Check that the matrix visualisation is still the selected item on the page. To populate the matrix visualisation, drag fields from the Data panel into the 'Row' Column' and 'Value' area in the Visualisation panel:
Fields will populate in the matrix as they are added to the 'Row' Column' and 'Value'
- Save the report when you're done
