Kallidus Tip: Why a Completed Lesson Might Show as “In Progress
Hello customer Community! 👋
Ever had a learner tell you they’ve finished a Lesson, but in Learn, it still shows as ‘In Progress’? 🤔 Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:
As a learner is viewing an eLearning Lesson, SCORM is continuously sending progress updates back to Learn. However, Learn only records the final status (to avoid hundreds of partial updates cluttering your records).
That final update happens when the learner closes the Lesson. So, if the Lesson is left open, or if something interrupts that final status being sent, like:
- A dropped internet connection
- Multiple tabs of the same course open
- Browser tab left open for an extended period without closing the eLearning
… the completion might not get sent to the Learn database.
🛠️ How to Troubleshoot
If a learner reports this issue, here’s what to check:
- Impersonate the User and confirm their report
- Check User Messages – Select ‘View messages’ from the User profile and see what they've been sent. Did they receive an evaluation request (if configured)? That’s strong evidence they completed the Lesson
- Review their Training history for the Lesson – take a look at the Users' training history for the Lesson. Is there an unusually long session duration?
- Dive into the Audit Log – this shows every SCORM update sent to Learn. If you see a “Complete” status here, the learner’s telling the truth!
💡 Pro Tip
Encourage your learners to always close their eLearning course window once they're done, or even if they're partway through the training and need to take a break. Learn will record their last known position and status in the course, so that the learner can pick up where they left off the next time they open the lesson.

There is also further learning on this topic in our Knowledgebase here:
https://kallidus.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003351494-Learn-Troubleshooting-SCORM-content-issues-Why-eLearning-results-may-not-appear-as-expectedwith some useful troubleshooting tips if content isn't working as you expect.
There's also some user-education tips to consider here I think…
i) are learners being given enough time to complete their training?
ii) are they being encouraged to switch off from various distractions and focus on their learning? (you wouldn't typically have your phone on, or be distracted by other work in a classroom training scenario, so are they being distracted when they're learning online?). Leaving a content window open for hours, is probably the top reason why a status hasn't recorded back to Learn, so it's an important consideration to ensure learners are focussed. -
This is really useful guys - and helpful troubleshooting!!

Thanks for sharing. Every quarter we assign a mandatory learning topic to 750 or so people. Each quarter a handful of people report this issue and it tends to be because of learners getting sidetracked after starting the lesson and later returning to it to complete it. However, there will be more people who just repeat the session without reporting it.
Have you guys explored timing people out due to inactivity? I know a solution is in the learner's gift but is there a tech solution to be found here? Being realistic, we've all started elearning modules and found ourselves having to park it. I don't think we can draw meaningful parallels between elearning and classroom training in this regard.

Hi Richard Rowan , great to see you here in the Community!
eLearning sessions do time out after an hour. This is primarily for security, as the learner may have left their PC open/unlocked and could potentially be used by someone else. For longer courses, therefore, you might consider adding a note to the learning to explain that it will time out after an hour of inactivity. To ensure your progress is saved, allocate some time to focus solely on the learning...
