In this article, we’ll look at examples of Basic and advanced filters and show how they might be used to filter results in a Power BI report.
In most cases, a report will be filtered using Basic Filters. However, advanced filters offer greater flexibility. For example, Advanced filters can be used for:
- Down-selecting data based on a specific word or phrase
- Applying Top X and Bottom X rankings to your data
- Excluding rows where a specific data field is empty
In this video, that might be used and sit alongside basic filters to make your reports do what you need.
Basic filters
Basic filters show a list of all the values in the field. You can search in page, visual, and report filters to find and select the value you want. For example, the filter type 'Basic filtering' is selected, and a choice of Yes or No is available:
Advanced filters
Advanced filters allow for more complexity. For example, you could search for values that 'contain' or 'don't contain', 'start with' or 'don't start with', and specific values.
