What is this about?
Adobe announced in 2017 their intention to withdraw support for Flash by the end of 2020, as this is now approaching we wanted to make sure you have all the information you may need to manage this change.
While Kallidus applications themselves do not require FLASH to run, some eLearning content does require it. This means that you may need to republish or create new eLearning.
So what is FLASH and why is this important?
Flash (sometimes referred to as Shockwave Flash) was originally developed by Macromedia in 1996 as an animation tool and plug-in for Web browsers and has since been acquired by Adobe Systems
Flash animations can contain text and vector graphics and typically they don't take up a lot of disk space which made Flash ideal for websites and e-Learning as the content can be downloaded relatively quickly.
To view Flash content in your Web browser, the Flash plug-in must be installed and following Adobe's announcement signaling the end of Flash, browsers will at some point end compatibility with the product.
Chrome are the first to stop offering Flash plugins by default although they can still be used if you configure the Chrome permissions accordingly. Note that this is for desktop browsers only, mobile devices using Chrome will not be able to play Flash content.
Web sites are increasingly migrating to open web technologies based on the HTML5 standard, which are faster and more resource-efficient than Flash. They’re also more secure, so you can be safer while online. They also work on both mobile and desktop.
How do I make my e-Learning content compatible?
If your eLearning content is more modern it is likely that it already contains both Flash and HTML5 versions, meaning it will automatically launch the version compatible with the browser you're using. If authored since 2017 it may even only contain the newer HTML5 standard.
However, older eLearning content or packages published in an old version of an authoring tool may need to be updated or republished.
If you would like help from Kallidus to republish or create new content, please contact your Customer Success Manager who will be happy to discuss with you.
